ATTRACTIONS AROUND BURLINGTON
“
For a small city, Burlington packs a wallop. From paddling the lake to climbing the mountains to shopping local on the Church Street Marketplace, Burlington is a different sort of destination. Most of the cities and towns in the region host great farmer’s markets and there are orchards and berry farms across the county. But don’t forget about some of our “tourist attractions” if you’re visiting (or even if you live here!)
The Ethan Allen Homestead is just one piece of the region’s Revolutionary War history. That conflict’s first naval battles were fought right on Lake Champlain, back when Benedict Arnold was one of the good guys. For more recent history, check out the Burton Factory Tour; a remarkably intimate walk through the history of snowboarding and Burton Snowboards. If you love the lake, but want to skip the cannonballs, take a cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen which will give you one of the best sunset views you can find anywhere. And stop in at ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, a family-friendly museum highlighting the region’s natural history.
Not to be missed, take an afternoon and head south to the Shelburne Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of American folk art. It’s also home to a steamship, 1,400 wildfowl decoys, and several masterworks of French Impressionism. Believe us, it is worth the trip.
